CSCS Qualification: What You Need to Know When Taking a CSCS Qualification

Having a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card increases your hirability in the UK. For employers, a person with a CSCS card has sufficient knowledge, training, and the skills necessary to effectively perform their jobs.

To obtain a CSCS card, an applicant must hold a level of skill and competence related to their job. In addition, they must undergo training and pass the CSCS tests related to the material.

Successful candidates are issued a CSCS card that is specific to the job type and level of training that they passed.

Employment for CSCS Card Holders

Hiring a candidate that has a CSCS card is likewise beneficial to the employer, as it reduces the risk of hiring someone who isn’t qualified for the job. CSC Card Types, Requirements, and Tests

Your CSC Card type determines the type of jobs that you can apply for. As you progress in your career, you can qualify for the additional training and obtain a new card when you pass the requisite test.

There are 12 different card types, each with a particular job experience qualification, pre-requisite tests passed and tests to be taken. Here are the card types and the description for each

  • CSCS Red Card is a provisional (temporary) card

This card has a validity of 6 months and is a provisional, nonrenewable card. This card issued to people who have never held a CSCS Card. To obtain a CSCS Red Card, an applicant must pass the CITB test.

  • CSCS Green Card – Labourers

This card has a validity of five years and is issued to anyone who has completed the Health Safety and Awareness one day level 1 course or online CSCS Green Card course. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Green Card, an applicant must pass the Operatives test.

  • CSCS Blue Card – Skilled Worker

This card is valid for five years and is issued to a person who is NVQ or SVQ level 2 certified. The applicant must have a previous qualification and have passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Blue Card, an applicant must pass the Operatives or the Specialist test.

  • CSCS Gold Card – Supervisory

This card has a validity of 5 years and is issued to an applicant in a supervisory position who has NVQ/SVQ level 3 or 4 certifications. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Gold Card for Supervisory, the applicant must pass the Operatives or Specialist test.

  • CSCS Gold Card – Advanced

This card has a validity of 5 years and is issued to an applicant who has completed an NVQ level 3 or apprenticeship qualification. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Gold Card – Advanced, the applicant must pass the Operatives or Specialist test.

  • CSCS Black Card – Manager

This card has a validity of 5 years and is issued to an applicant who held a Level 4 qualification and has certification for an NVQ level 5, 6, or 7. The applicant must have also passed the CITB.

  • CSCS White Card – Academically Qualified Person

This card has a validity of five years. An applicant should have degrees or qualifications that include HNDs, HNCs, CIOB Certificates, and NEBOSH diplomas. They must have also passed the CITB test.

  • CSCS White Card (Professionally Qualified Person)

To obtain the card, the applicant must have proof of professional body registration or membership and must have passed the CITB test. Without proof of professional body registration or membership, the applicant is unable to proceed with the qualification.

  • CSCS Red Card – Experienced Worker (temporary card)

This card has a validity of 1 year and is non-renewable. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. This is issued to Experienced Workers who have passed the Operatives or the Specialist test.

  • CSCS Red Card – Experienced Technical, Supervisor, or Manager

This card is only for temporary use and is only available to applicants with on-the-job experience. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain this Red temporary card, the applicant must pass the Specialist, Mangers, or Professionals test.

  • CSCS Red Card – Trainee

This card has a validity of five years and but is non-renewable. This card is issued to an applicant who has proof of registration to an NVQ from the training provider, professional body, or university. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Red Card – Trainee, the applicant must pass the Operatives or Specialist test

  • CSCS Red Card – Apprentice

This card has a validity of 4 years 6 months and issued to an applicant who has proof from their training organization or employer. The applicant must have also passed the CITB test. To obtain the CSCS Red Card – Apprentice, the applicant must pass the Operatives or Specialist test.
